We now have Plasencia Cigars!

The Cigar Exchange is pleased to announce we now carry Plasencia Cigars! Plasencia Cigars have a long rich history in the cigar industry.

1865 - Don Eduardo Plasencia left The Canary Islands in search of success and opportunity and started growing tobacco in Vuelta Abajo, Cuba.

1898 - Don Eduardo’s nephew, Sixto Plasencia Juares, expanded the business and opened the Corojal farm.

1920 - Sixto Plasencia created “Hijos de Sixto Plasencia” (Sixto Plasencia’s sons) and began to export and sell to bigger companies.

1963 - Castro’s regime confiscated the farms. Don Sixto and his family fled to Mexico with only what they could carry, and later relocated to Nicaragua.

1965 - Starting again from scratch, Don Sixto planted his best seeds in the fertile soils of Nicaragua.

1978 - Due to political turmoil, the Plasencia family’s tobacco farms were burned down, forcing the family to move to Honduras.

1986 - Néstor Plasencia entered the cigar business, manufacturing 1 million cigars a year for other companies.

1990 - Keeping the farms in Honduras, the family went back to Nicaragua to revive the land and raise the production to 33 million cigars a year.

2000 - 30 different brands trust Plasencia to produce their cigars.

2015 - Plasencia became the largest grower of tobacco in the world with more than 6,000 employees, 4 factories, and 8 plantations in Honduras and Nicaragua, producing 40 million cigars a year.

2017 - Plasencia Cigars, the family’s own brand was launched. Néstor Andrés, Gustavo, and José Luis Plasencia introduced the Alma series, Reserva Original, and the Cosecha 146 among others.

A History of Atabey

It was the Taino Indians who first smoked a primitive form of what we call today cigars.

It was during the full moon that the Taino Indians, in religious fashion, all carrying in their hands tobacco leaves rolled as a cigar, would light the cigars while in prayer. The Taino’s would form a circle of worship known as cohiba and smoke their cigars. Unique rituals performed by men of the tribe around the leader and wizard of the tribe, called Bejique or behike of the Tribe.

When the Taino Indians went into a state of delirium by the smoke, they would then blow the smoke over the wise leader, the behike, who was in the middle of the circle, so that with his divine powers raised to heaven, through the smoke he received, he would give those prayers to the goddess idol Atabey.

Atabey is Supreme deity of the Taino Indians.
